What is toe nail Fungus?

The worst thing about the toe nail fungus is it is highly infectious in nature and spreads very rapidly. There are four main types of Onychomycosis namely:
- White Superficial Onychomycosis - It is caused due to the invasion of the fungus on the superficial layer of the nail plate to form 'white islands' on the plate. But this type of nail fungus is very rare and accounts only 10% of Onychomycosis.
- Candidal Onychomycosis - This nail fungus is caused by a species of fungus called Candida and it mainly invaded the fingernails. If your finger nails are infected or damaged then frequently immersing your hand into the water may cause this disease.
- Distal Subungual Onychomycosis - It is the most common form and caused due to Tinea Unguium (dermatopyte) which invades the nail bed and undersides the nail plate.
- Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis - It is the least common form and in this the fungus penetrates the newly formed nail plate through the proximal nail fold and infected the nails.
